What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically inserted below the gumline and into the jawbone to replace the missing root structure of teeth.

Because they’re biocompatible, dental implants naturally fuse with the jaw, allowing them to provide the area with stimulation and support that keeps the bone from deteriorating with time. Once osseointegration occurs, our team can then attach restorations atop the implants to complete your smile.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The process for receiving dental implants in Delray Beach is more complex than that of traditional restorations like dentures or bridges, meaning that the timeline can be several months longer. However, when you consider all of the impressive benefits that dental implants have to offer, including the capability to last for decades, it becomes clear that the wait is a very small price to pay. While every treatment plan looks different, in most cases, the whole process can be categorized into four distinct steps. Here’s a closer look at each of them:

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

The first step of your dental implant journey begins at our office, where you’ll meet with Dr. Dadaciu for a consultation. She’ll sit down with you to discuss your smile goals while also performing a thorough examination of your mouth, which includes assessing your oral health as well as your remaining jawbone density. Patients must be in decent oral health and have enough jawbone tissue to be eligible for dental implants—the posts must be placed into a healthy, favorable environment. Fortunately, preliminary procedures such as periodontal therapy or bone grafting can normally address these issues. Once we’ve confirmed you’re a good candidate, we can schedule your surgery.

Dental Implant Surgery

Next comes your dental implant placement surgery, which you’ll be happy to hear can be completed right here at our Delray Beach office with the help of Dr. Dadaciu and our skilled team. After your mouth has been numbed, small incisions will be made in your gum tissue to access your jawbone. The implants are placed at precise locations and angles, and anywhere between one to four or so will be used, depending on your needs. It takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours to place a single implant, with more complex cases taking longer. After they’ve been placed, your gums will be sutured shut, and it’s normal for protective caps to be placed over them to help maintain their shape during the healing process.

Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment

Osseointegration refers to the fusion of the implant posts with your jawbone tissue—this is possible thanks to the biocompatible materials used to construct the implants. This process normally takes several months to complete, and there’s nothing you can do to speed things up aside from maintaining excellent oral hygiene and caring for your mouth. However, once this fusion is complete, it ensures that the dental implants remain sturdy enough to act as replacement tooth roots. From there, abutments can be attached to the top of the posts, which are connector pieces that eventually secure the replacement teeth.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)

Your restoration will be designed based on impressions of your natural smile, meaning that these replacement teeth should look, feel, and function exactly like your original pearly whites. After you’ve fully healed up, you’re ready to come back to receive your new teeth, which come in the form of a personalized denture, crown, or bridge, and are attached to the top of the abutments. At this point, we’ll double-check to make sure everything fits correctly and that your bite is comfortable. Once you’ve received your restoration, you’ll be all set to immediately begin enjoying all the benefits of a complete smile!

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants have a lot to offer, which is why they’re quickly becoming the most popular option for replacing missing teeth. With the ability to preserve jawbone density, dental implants allow you to maintain your natural, full facial structure. Plus, because they restore the entire tooth, you will be able to eat all of your favorite foods without fear of shifting or slipping. And they are extremely durable, able to last for 30+ years in many cases (regular dentures and bridges typically have to be replaced every 5-10 years)
